British shoot-em-up vs. Murderous “Office Space”

Last movie I saw: The Tournament (trailer here). Excellent companion piece to Operation: Endgame (trailer here), which I was a few weeks before. Both are battle royale action movies with assassins and hitmen wasting each other left and right for the flimsiest of reasons. Both are gloriously violent. Both went straight to DVD. Neither are great movies in any way, but both have their perks. So, to pick a favorite…

The Tournament has guns, so that’s always a plus. The excuse for violence is this Tournament: a 24-hour free-for-all between the world’s best assassins, fighting for survival in a sleepy British town while high-class gamblers bet on their odds. It’s Rat Race with guns. It’s also got Robert Carlyle as an alcoholic priest caught in the crossfire, and that’s a big plus, because I’m a sucker for a Scottish accent. But the movie’s dialogue could be better: very expository, very clunky and random but trying to sound cool. It’s textbook action movie dialogue. Then there’s Ian Somerhalder. He gets to play the psychopath, but he swings for the fences in every scene, and it doesn’t do him any good. Gary Oldman in The Professional, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Chris Walken in anything he does: the good psychopaths always show some restraint, hinting at something beneath the surface you wouldn’t want to let loose. Somerhalder lets loose. You can tell what kind of character he’s trying to play, but he doesn’t have the subtlety to play it. Robert Carlyle, ironically, would be great in that role, but he does an admirable job as the frantic priest. All that aside, the movie’s an entertaining diversion. Some good action, some good characters, some good acrobatics by parkour whiz Sebastien Foucan. It’s a “some” kind of movie.

Operation: Endgame has the better cast by far: Jeffery Tambor, Bob Odenkirk, Rob Corddry, Ellen Barkin, Adam Scott, Emilie de Ravin as a screw-loose Southern belle, Ving Rhames, Zach Galifianakis, and Brandon T. Jackson make appearances (some more brief than others) as bureaucrats/assassins in an underground office, with – one of my favorites – Joe Anderson as the new recruit having the worst first day ever. The team’s leader is murdered, they all turn on each other, etc. Not important. Operation: Endgame has the added plus of being half comedy/half action, allowing Corddry a few memorable tirades. Two of the best characters, though, are Michael Hitchcock and Tim Bagley as the two indifferent, middle-aged surveillance drones, cracking jokes and making comments like The Muppets’ Statler and Waldorf as the brouhaha unfolds before them on a giant monitor. The big difference from The Tournament, aside from a sense of humor? No guns. People die by office supplies: scissors, bookends, staple removers, table legs, paper cutters; the killings get inventive. But even with all its perks, the movie almost comes undone in the last ten minutes, when it goes completely up its own ass with a ham-handed political message. The twist at the end is a decent one, but the delivery is horrible. The sense of humor disappears and things get deathly solemn. It almost, ALMOST negates the fun that came before.

The winner? Operation: Endgame. I wouldn’t go so far as to recommend heading out and renting it, but if you find it flipping through channels, it’s worth a shot.
