Check out www.youtube.com For clips from the training as well as some alternative scenes from the flight. – Surely the most amazing and humbling views to be seen by any human on a regular basis. The view from a U-2 cruising at 70000ft as the sky above turns black and the curvature of the Earth is visible. Despite first flying over 50 years ago, the U-2 continues to serve in the USAF, having outlasted its Mach 3 replacement, the SR-71 (also from Lockheed). The only people to have gone gone higher on any sort of regular basis were SR-71 pilots. Astronautics have, of course, gone higher still, but certainly not on a regular basis. There is a special message at the end of the video that I hope can be taken to heart by all.

@Treetop64 Yeah i Know but a liner at 35 000ft needs to have an airspeed of about 280Kt…So 100Kt @ 70 000ft it is glider performance

I think the indicated airspeed at that altitude would only show 100kts. True airspeed would probably be about 300 or 400 kts.

@Zhangnitzu In the U-2, these are really contrail mirrors. But rear view mirriors are quite common in fighter jets to assist pilots in checking for any enemy aircraft behind them. These are often mounted to the canopy frame (though with aircraft like the F-16 or F-22, there is no frame to mount them too).

@tpaladino: Obviously, you’re NOT a fighter pilot. If you were a USAF pilot you would know that fighter pilots can wear glasses/contacts – especially as they get older. Should I tell my fighter pilot friends flying with their glasses that they are not fighter pilots because you say they can’t be since they wear glasses? Would you throw away your very expensive automobile if it got a flat tire? Why would the USAF throw away a multi-million dollar (trained) pilot because be became 20/30 ???

Un-freakin-believable. Breathtaking, completely breathtaking. That was awesome, I would not turn down an offer like that if it was presented to me…Just watching that video and realizing how high they were leads me to say how insignificant we are as human beings on this planet, let alone the universe…an individual human being is nothing but a spec of dust on the computer desk at that altitude…

My daughter and I have been watching both seasons of Conchords & we both like this song. It’s very ‘Beatle-Esque’ and she likes the ending where all of the people do the music wave in the alley. Good song, kind of like Hey Jude at the end.
